- Technologies: WordPress + Larch theme + Tons of plugins + Lots of customization
This was the first version of my personal website. The content wasn't so different from what you see here now, but I also had a blog, where I wrote bangers such as Why My App Rating Taking a Hit Might Not Be All Bad News and Is Xamarin Forms a Bug? (spoiler alert: it was).
For that first version, I used WordPress. I had already tinkered with it in the past, and it always seemed quite nice and easy to use? Thus, I assumed it'd be a great way to get things up and running quickly: buy a nice-looking theme, set it all up... And that's it. Or so I thought. In reality, getting it to work was often quite painful!
The myriad of plugins I needed to use would interfere with each other, and the theme, which looked ideal in theory, actually required a lot of tinkering and customisation in practice. As a consequence, every update would wreak havoc and break half the website, which wasn't very fun – this is why, eventually, I ditched WordPress and created a new version of the website.
All that said, perhaps the most difficult part was the digital archeology I had to carry out in order to find and list my past projects. I am glad I did it though, as I love having an archive of (some of) the nonsense I've entertained myself with over the years, but putting it all together took a lot of time and effort, as most things were lost to time (many still are, either because I've forgetten about them, or simply because, like the Counter Strike Source map I created at fourteen or fifteen, they've vanished from the face of the Earth!).
